“We are looking forward to being involved with ACADI, and we’re very hopeful of where this collaboration led by Associate Professor Elif Ekinci and based at the University of Melbourne, will take us,” she said.
Earlier this year, the Federal Government announced that ACADI had been awarded a total of $10 million over four years, which had been allocated from the Targeted Translation Research Accelerator component of the Medical Research Future Fund to a consortium led by the University of Melbourne – involving 69 other partner organisations across Australia.
Diabetes Victoria and Deakin University are partners with University of Melbourne on ACADI, with Diabetes Victoria directly involved in one of ACADI’s work streams.
As the leading charity and peak consumer body working to reduce the impact of diabetes in the Victorian community, Diabetes Victoria has been an active, member-based organisation for nearly 70 years.
Ms Hines said, “Our focus is on listening to those with lived experience, and their carers in ensuring the 91 people diagnosed in Victoria every day and the more than 370,000 people living with diabetes in this state are supported to understand and manage their diabetes to live well.”
Diabetes Victoria provides education, information and support to promote self-management and empower all people living with diabetes.
“It is more pressing than ever to invest in diabetes innovations to further our understanding of managing this serious and complex condition.
“There is much to be done and we are very hopeful this significant collaboration will lead to new discoveries to control the many risks and complications associated with diabetes.
“Through the work of ACADI we are certainly moving in the right direction,” said Ms Hines.
