World Diabetes Day 2024

Managing diabetes affects every part of life, from mental health to daily routines. Wellbeing plays a crucial role in supporting people to live well with diabetes. Many still find it difficult to locate the right resources and support.

That’s why this World Diabetes Day (WDD), we’re putting wellbeing front and centre. We turn the focus to tools and programs.

We aim to empower people to prioritise their wellbeing, their way, with confidence.

Living with diabetes brings unique challenges, whether at home, work, school, or in social settings. It requires resilience, organisation, and constant responsibility. This can have an impact on both physical and mental health.

Diabetes care often leaves many feeling overwhelmed and isolated.

This WDD, we’re breaking down stigma and promoting a holistic approach for those living with diabetes.

Through tailored programs and resources, we aim to help people focus on their wellbeing. This is an essential part of managing diabetes. Together, we will build a future diabetes can do no harm.

Supports and Services

Why wellbeing is so Important

  • Your wellbeing matters

Sleep and mental health are deeply interconnected which is why your wellbeing matters! Quality sleep plays a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing mental well-being.

  • A 50-year legacy

Albury Wodonga Diabetes Support Group celebrates their 50th year. This milestone highlights why peer support groups are not only important for strengthening the community, but they also mark another milestone.

  • Emotional Health – Adults living with diabetes

There are many resources available to people living with diabetes and their support network to stay connected. These resources include free factsheets, telephone helplines and counselling services among others.

  • Who supports the supporter?

    Who supports the supporter?

Deb’s phone sits charging on the cradle and lights up the room with fully drawn curtains while she is resting in bed. The phone never leaves the cradle but always has the *LibreLink app turned on, to let her husband Greg know what her glucose levels are in real time.

  • Emotional health – Young people living with diabetes

Diabetes does not discriminate and unfortunately, statistics show diabetes distress in children and adolescents is very real. There is help at hand for parents and children in the form of printable resources, telephone numbers and online forums.

    Yarrawonga Mulwala Support Group

“The group has been great for mental health to know that there are so many people in the area with T1 and the knowledge which has been shared in the short time that our group has been together. The reassurance that the way I’m handling my T1D is well. Without the group I wouldn’t be able to keep up to date [with] the latest technology around T1D.”

Diabetes Nurse Educator – HealthAbility Carrington Health Diabetes Support Group

“As a Diabetes Nurse Educator, I joined our workplace Diabetes Support Group (DSG) at the start of 2022. Our DSG meets on a monthly basis and is a wonderful support for individuals with diabetes to obtain support from each other and listen to a presentation. Our group can range from 5-15 participants. Each month we have a special presentation that is related to diabetes and allows each individual to feel motivated to manage their diabetes. Last year we had presentations from myself (Diabetes Educator), the Dietitian and the Exercise Physiologist. We have a lovely group of men and women attend and hope our group can continue well into the future”
