Diabetes Victoria welcomes new Board Member
Meet Mr. Howard
Mr Howard has had a long and distinguished career as a barrister, QC and judge practising in criminal law. He retired as a Judge of the County Court in 2016. Whilst at the Victorian Bar, Mr Howard was a member of the Bar’s Indigenous Lawyers’ Mentoring Program, chaired the Legal Assistance Committee (the Bar’s pro bono legal service), contributed to the development of the Equal Opportunity Briefing Policy to support the progression of women barristers, and chaired a committee to assist new barristers as they started out in their careers.
Mr Howard was made a Member of the Order of Australia on 26 January 2019 for significant service to the law, to the judiciary, to professional standards, and to the community of Victoria.
Mr Howard worked on the community and international affairs program of his wife, the former Governor of Victoria, the Hon Linda Dessau AC CVO, from 2015 until June 2023.
Mr Howard also brings his lived experience with diabetes to the Board. He has been living with type 1 (LADA) since 2006 and has been using insulin to manage his condition since 2021. His passion for social education and early intervention to reduce the impact of diabetes is an asset to Diabetes Victoria and the community.
As well as Diabetes Victoria, Mr Howard has been involved in various other community and not-for-profit organisations, including as a Trustee of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuroscience Foundation, founding Chair of the Essendon Football Club Lawdons coterie and as a Board member of the youth mentoring organisation Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
Diabetes Victoria is the leading peak body dedicated to reducing the impact of all types of diabetes on individuals, families, communities and health systems across Victoria. There are almost 400,000 Victorians living with diabetes.
