Advocacy and Policy Change

At Diabetes Victoria, we are committed to improving the lives of people affected by diabetes. A key part of this commitment is working with government and policymakers to address the challenges faced by people living with diabetes and their families.

Advocating for all Victorians is at the heart of what we do. We do this to ensure the voices of our every Victorian community are heard and their needs are met.

On this page, you will find all the ways we work to influence meaningful policy change. This includes submissions we make to government, parliamentary inquiries and state and federal budget proposals, as well as reports like our Diabetes: Testing Times document, which highlights the real-life experiences and barriers faced by the diabetes community.

We use these tools to inform and influence decision-makers about critical issues, such as:

  • the need for affordable healthcare
  • equitable access to diabetes supplies and services
  • and stronger prevention programs

By presenting evidence-based recommendations and sharing the stories of those affected by diabetes, we aim to build a healthcare system that supports everyone, no matter where they live or what type of diabetes they have.

Our advocacy efforts are shaped by the insights and feedback we receive from the diabetes community. We will continue to work together to create a world in which diabetes can do no harm.

  • Victorian state budget submission

Diabetes is now affecting more than one in seven Victorians, including those undiagnosed or at high risk. In response, Diabetes Victoria recently submitted a state budget proposal to the Victorian Government, calling for action to address this growing health crisis.

  • Submission to parliamentary inquiry

During National Diabetes Week 2023, we invited contributions from the diabetes community to inform our submission to the Federal Government’s inquiry into diabetes in Australia.

  • Diabetes. Testing times

By 2026, over 500,000 Victorians will be diagnosed with diabetes. With support and resources, diabetes can be well managed, and people affected by diabetes can live long, healthy and happy lives.

  • Health policy and government relations lead appointment

Diabetes Victoria is pleased to announce the appointment of Holly Piontek Walker in the new role of Health Policy and Government Relations Manager.

  • Victoria’s Parliament House and other representatives hold sign and pose for camera

Victoria’s Parliament House Shines a Light on Diabetes Care

An event held at Victoria’s Parliament House marked a significant milestone in our collective efforts to improve the lives of those living with or affected by diabetes.
