Managing your diabetes effectively when CGM allocation is exhausted
Eligibility and limits
Eligibility to access CGM products is based on the number of items obtained in the past 12 months. This will determine when more subsidised supplies can be acquired. To ensure freshness, it's recommended to order only a one-month supply of sensors at a time due to their limited shelf life.
If you are having trouble using your device or believe that it may be faulty, please contact;
- AMSL for Dexcom products (1300 851 056);
- Medtronic for Medtronic products (1800 777 808); or
- Abbott for Freestyle Libre products (1800 801 478).
By contacting the supplier instead of ordering additional supplies, you may be able to receive a replacement product without impacting your CGM product limits.
If allocation exhaustion occurs
If you have exhausted your CGM allocation, it's important to continue to manage your diabetes. We have put together some tips to help you stay on top of your diabetes management until you can gain access to a CGM device.
Check your purchase history
There are a couple of ways to check your purchase history and allocation limits:
- Log in to the NDSS Online Services Portal using your NDSS registration details. Go to your order history section to see how many CGM/Flash GM products you have received.
- If you collect your sensors from a local pharmacy, ask them for a record of past purchases.
- If you order online, check your order history in your account or past emails.
- Call the NDSS helpline on 1800 637 700 and ask them to confirm your CGM allocation.
This will help you to determine when your CGM allocation will be renewed.
Self funded CGM
If you prefer to manage your blood glucose using a CGM, you can also self-fund this technology. Head to the website of your preferred supplier or go to your local pharmacy for more information about ordering a CGM device privately until your allocation is renewed. Keep in mind, this is not refundable and only allocations provided through the NDSS are subsidised.
Access alternative blood glucose testing equipment
Until your CGM allocation is renewed, it's important to use other blood glucose testing methods, such as a blood glucose meter and test strips.
This equipment is vital for monitoring and managing your blood glucose levels. If you need assistance or have questions about using these methods, you should arrange a time to speak with a health professional.
They can provide guidance and support to ensure you are using the equipment correctly and effectively.
Where to access this technology
You can access subsidised blood glucose testing equipment through the NDSS. Speak to your pharmacy to get these products.
Products will include:
- Blood glucose testing meter
- Compatible blood glucose test strips
- Lancing device
- Compatible lancets
Consult your diabetes care team
