HypoActive supporting camps program
Against all odds.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the annual Murray to Moyne cycling event could not go ahead, yet the peer support group and incorporated charity managed to raise vital funds for children with type 1 diabetes.
“Lots of people contributed to our cause, and after we offered refunds to all donors because of the event cancellation, due to their generosity we raised in excess of $8600 dollars,” said HypoActive president John Stevens.
He pointed out that the group was disappointed when the Murray to Moyne cycle relay was cancelled. “It really is a great event for us to challenge ourselves, get together with the HypoActive community and share experiences, all while raising funds for children’s diabetes camps. So any time we struggle to get a team or, in this case, the event is cancelled, it is quite a disappointment,” John said.
Diabetes Victoria recently thanked some of HypoActive’s committee members for their fundraising efforts during a virtual Zoom meeting. A large amount of the donation was raised by Chris Gardiner. “An absolutely awesome effort that came at some personal cost, that of shaving off all the hair on his head,” said John. “Also, he and Tony Seymour scored a donation from the Drouin Lions Club, so these two legends deserve special recognition for their effort.”
HypoActive is, by definition, Victoria’s most active peer support group. Their mission is “to inspire and enable the type 1 community to live a more physically active lifestyle”. Group members meet regularly, both on an organisational level and through social activities, for example their run/walk/ride events where people living with type 1 diabetes from across the state come together to learn from another in a fun social activity.
