Edith James recognised for vital contribution to peer support group

Edith was nominated by her long-time friend and group member, Maryanne Wright, and the nomination highlighted Edith's role as a cornerstone in the Essendon and District Diabetes Support Group for over a decade.

Her exceptional leadership and communication skills have been instrumental in keeping the group vibrant, engaged, and enthusiastic, even amid challenging times such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Edith's embrace of technology, including Zoom meetings, ensured the group's continued connectivity.

Edith's impact goes beyond the formalities of the group; actively fostering a sense of community by organising activities like a Tuesday walking group along the Maribyrnong River and monthly lunches, while special events like "Christmas in July" bring members together for festive celebrations.

Edith truly embodies the values of Diabetes Victoria, contributing in a way that aligns with our mission to support, empower, and campaign for all Victorians affected by, or at risk of, diabetes.
In her role as the peer support convenor for over a decade, Edith has also been pivotal to other local community groups like U3A and Probus. She plays a crucial role in connecting the Essendon and District Diabetes Support Group at the Avondale Heights Library and manages their Facebook page.

The group, comprising around 40 members, engages in various activities, including walks along the Maribyrnong River, lunches, hearing from health professional guest speakers and recently, a tour of the Great Ocean Road.

Diabetes peer support provides social support and assistance for those living with or affected by diabetes.
