The theme of the day, 'Diabetes and Wellbeing,' focused on the importance of taking care of both physical and mental health when living with diabetes.

Guest speakers shared practical advice, including tips on eating nutritious food, staying active, and regularly monitoring blood sugar levels. They also emphasised how talking to friends and family can make a big difference in managing emotional health.

The first event was held in the morning at Kalkallo North Community Centre, and the second took place in the afternoon at Olivine Shared Space in Donnybrook. Both sessions created opportunities for attendees to ask questions, share their experiences, and connect with others who understood their challenges.

Many participants appreciated having a supportive space to learn and interact.

Raj, a member of the local Indian community, helped Carla by translating her presentation into Punjabi, making sure everyone could follow along.

Carla explained the free services provided by Diabetes Victoria, such as telehealth appointments with nurses and dietitians, which are also available in multiple languages. She encouraged attendees to get their blood sugar levels checked, stressing the importance of early diagnosis to avoid complications.

Participants were given a variety of resources to support them in managing diabetes. These included fact sheets in Punjabi and other languages, offering simple, practical tips for staying healthy. Event sponsors also provided free blood glucose monitors, which attendees were excited to take home. The monitors were especially popular and seen as a valuable tool for keeping track of blood sugar levels.

The atmosphere at both events was warm and welcoming.

Some attendees brought traditional dishes to share with organisers and participants, fostering a strong sense of community. The events brought together people of all ages, from children to grandparents, making it a meaningful and memorable day for everyone involved.

Special recognition goes to Karen Thorne, the Peer Support Convenor, who worked tirelessly to organise the events. Her efforts ensured everything ran smoothly and even included a fundraising initiative for Diabetes Victoria.

Karen’s dedication played a key role in the success of the day and left a lasting impression on the community.

World Diabetes Day with the Craigieburn and District Diabetes Peer Support Group was both inspiring and educational.

The events demonstrated the power of community, the importance of raising awareness, and the value of working together to support people living with diabetes.
