Diabetes Peer Support groups promote National Diabetes Week

This year, several peer support groups embraced the opportunity to amplify the week by organising events and emphasising the support available to people living with or affected by diabetes in their communities through local media.

Access to technology on the agenda

In 2024, the theme for National Diabetes Week focused on access to technology in all forms, ensuring it is accessible to everyone. This includes using applications on mobile phones or knowing how to upload diabetes data to send to an endocrinologist.

Peer support groups amplify the message

The Albury Wodonga Peer Support groups organised a slew of events and a front-page article reached an impressive readership of 80,000 in the local paper. They connected with over 300 people in their local group. The Yarrawonga Type 1 Peer Support Group also hosted a community stall, promoting their group and the Yarrawonga Health Service, conducting diabetes checks for community members, and raising funds at their local Bunnings.

Many small rural groups connected their local communities with the larger Birchip Support Group, and the Bairnsdale Support Group. They highlighted their groups, diabetes, Diabetes Victoria’s support offerings and how people can get involved.

These efforts support diabetes advocacy, highlight community services and offerings, and showcase the tremendous work of local volunteers.
