Strategic Priorities 2024-2030
The Diabetes Victoria Strategy 2024 - 2030
The Time For Action
Learn about our vision, the areas we’re prioritising, and how we’re working to make a lasting impact in the community.
Prevention
Fewer people will develop diabetes.
All Victorians deserve to be in good health for as long as possible. Prevention needs to be a priority for all types of diabetes, even after a cure is found.
Access
More people affected by diabetes will have access to a timely diagnosis, and the quality healthcare, education, treatments and technologies they need.
Empowerment
More people with diabetes will be empowered to self-manage their condition, their way, with confidence.
People living with diabetes know their condition better than everyone else - they manage their condition 24/7.
Stigma
People will live free from diabetes stigma and discrimination.
Diabetes stigma and discrimination negatively impact people's health, wellbeing, professional and social lives.
Complications
People with diabetes will live free from the harmful impacts of complications.
All types of diabetes are serious and can cause further health complications. Anyone living with diabetes may experience complication through no fault of their own.
Research
More people will benefit from research breakthroughs to prevent, manage or cure diabetes.
Research is essential to prevent or find a cure for all types of diabetes. Research will improve how we manage diabetes, and how to best support people affected by diabetes.

The organisational commitment to valuing lived experience and collaborating with the community are the most exciting parts for me.
As far as the strategic priorities are concerned – as a researcher, goal 6 really is very exciting to me – and as a person with diabetes, goal 4 regarding decreasing stigma and discrimination is the most important one to me as I have a firm belief that without doing a good job on this goal, none of the other goals are achievable.

I think our work has the ability to impact multiple strategies however, Goal 1 - Prevention is the one where we will have a massive impact and changing lives every day.
Thinking about the future, I hope that the Life! program can one day broaden it’s reach to beyond those who are considered at high risk, to include any Victorian who is needing support and wanting more information on leading a healthy life, to become the ultimate prevention program.

I am most excited about Goal 3 – Empowerment and Strategic priority ‘improving health outcomes’. I think we do this so well already, and I look forward to continuing, and these go hand in hand in our camp setting. One of the primary goals of camp is to empower campers with increased knowledge and skills to improve self-management with diabetes. Campers learn from their peers, our volunteers living with type 1 become their role models and from the health professionals looking after them.
